Recently, journalist Amelia Raines of Honi Soit, Australia’s only weekly student newspaper and an independent voice from the University of Sydney, published an article highlighting the local push for para-rowing initiatives and our journey toward an inclusive clubhouse at Iron Cove. The article captures the collective effort behind this project, underscoring the dedication of community members, athletes, and supporters who share our vision of accessible rowing for everyone. This piece is a testament to the momentum and support that our community has rallied to bring this dream to life. We are thrilled to share some exciting news about our ongoing mission at the Community Rowing Club to create a more accessible and inclusive rowing experience for all. For years, we have dedicated ourselves to building a welcoming space for rowers of every background and ability. Our current location on the rocky banks of Lane Cove has made participation challenging, especially for our para-rowers. However, with a new clubhouse at Iron Cove in sight, we are closer than ever to realizing our dream of accessibility and inclusion in rowing.

The proposed facility, supported by the Local Aboriginal Land Council, will be thoughtfully constructed to ensure access for everyone—whether using wheelchairs, walkers, or navigating visual impairments. This new boatshed isn’t just a clubhouse; it represents a space where para-athletes, Indigenous teams, and rowers of all abilities can pursue their passion for the sport side by side. The design will prioritize ease of movement and connection, embodying our club’s commitment to fostering a united community both on and off the water.

Our remarkable group of para-athletes who train with us is already making waves. Our vision for this new clubhouse aligns perfectly with the Disability Inclusion Action Plan from Inner West Council, which strives to create spaces where individuals with disabilities can participate fully in community life. The Iron Cove project will do just that, allowing more people to engage in recreational rowing, connect with others, and experience the thrill and camaraderie of being part of a team.

Rowing isn’t just a sport to us—it’s a way to connect, grow, and share in a community that cares. We hope this new facility will be a beacon of inclusive sport, where people from all walks of life can come together, form bonds, and experience the joy of rowing in a safe, accessible environment.

As we await the final approval from the Sydney Eastern Planning Panel, we remain deeply grateful for the support of organizations like Rowing Australia, Paralympics Australia, and Vision Australia, as well as our passionate club members and the wider community. Together, we are building not just a clubhouse but a legacy of inclusivity, resilience, and unity. Thank you to everyone who believes in this vision—we can’t wait to welcome you to Iron Cove!
